Because the result is built from a predictive equation, it describes an average and drifts when your body is unusual. Very muscular people generally need more than the formula suggests, since lean tissue burns more energy at rest, while people with little muscle mass often need less. At the extremes of body size the estimate loses accuracy, and it cannot account for thyroid conditions, medications or other factors that change metabolism.
