Anchoring to bodyweight rather than to a percentage of calories means your protein stays high enough even when you cut calories.
Fat is set next, as a share of your total calories chosen by your diet style: about 30% for a balanced split, 40% for lower-carb, or 20% for a higher-carb, endurance-leaning approach — all within the Institute of Medicine's acceptable range of 20–35% (a little higher for lower-carb). Carbohydrate then fills whatever calories are left. The ketogenic style flips the final step: carbohydrate is pinned to about 25 g and fat absorbs the remainder.
