This calculator starts from your body weight, using about 35 ml of fluid per kilogram — a common clinical rule of thumb for healthy adults. A 70 kg person gets a baseline near 2,450 ml a day. It then adds an allowance for activity, because every session of exercise loses fluid through sweat: the more active your day, the larger that add-on. The result is your estimated total water for the day.
Because roughly a fifth of daily water comes from food — fruit, vegetables, soups, even bread all carry water — the amount you actually need to drink is about 80% of the total. The calculator shows both the full target and the from-drinks figure, plus the same number in litres and in 240 ml cups, so it's easy to translate into glasses or a bottle.
Authoritative bodies set population reference values rather than per-kilogram formulas. The European Food Safety Authority suggests an adequate total water intake of about 2.0 litres a day for women and 2.5 litres for men. The U.S. Institute of Medicine is a little higher, at roughly 2.7 litres for women and 3.7 litres for men. Both figures include water from food, and both are averages for sedentary adults in temperate climates.
The body-weight method this tool uses tends to land in the same neighbourhood while flexing for your size and activity, which a single population number can't do. Treat the two as cross-checks: if your estimate sits far outside the EFSA/IOM range, it's usually because of an unusual body weight or a very high activity allowance — both legitimate reasons to need more or less.
Use the target as a planning anchor, not a quota to force down. Spread intake across the day rather than gulping it all at once, drink a little more around workouts and in hot weather, and let thirst top you up between. A practical habit is to keep a known-volume bottle on hand so you can see roughly how much you've had without counting every cup.
The simplest real-time check is urine colour: pale straw means you're well hydrated, while dark yellow suggests you're behind. Combined with drinking to thirst, that keeps most healthy people on track far better than rigidly hitting a number.
This is a general guide for healthy adults. It does not adjust for pregnancy or breastfeeding, fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, hot or high-altitude environments, or endurance events — all of which raise fluid needs, sometimes sharply. On the other side, some heart, kidney and liver conditions require deliberately limiting fluid, and certain medications change how much you should drink.
